World Health Organization Sounds Warning Over Critical Scarcity of Weight-Loss Jabs

Under one in 10 people that would benefit from weight-loss injections such as Wegovy are able to get them, caution the World Health Organization as it issues its inaugural guidance on the drugs.

Considering in excess of 1,000,000,000 people worldwide now classified as obese, it is urging increased and just access to GLP-1 medication.

Based on forecasts, more than two billion could be living with obesity by 2030 unless action is taken.

"The new guidance acknowledges that excess weight is a long-term condition that can be addressed with thorough and lifelong treatment," remarked the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, insufficient output, and supply-chain constraints are significant barriers to widespread access to the jabs that can help people shift substantial body mass, explains the body.

GLP-1 Therapy Shortage

Even under the current most optimistic scenario, the supply of such drugs might only reach about 100 million people – less than 10% of those who need them, per the health organization.

The recommendation urges countries and companies to expand access, by measures such as patent sharing.

Exclusive production rights on the active ingredient – the primary ingredient of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in several countries in 2026.

How Obesity Injections Function

The injections imitate a body's own hormone to slow digestion, curb appetite and enhance the sense of being full so people eat less.

Individuals typically begin shedding pounds after several weeks of beginning the weekly injections.

Research indicates people may put most of the weight back on after a year of discontinuing the medication, when their normal food cravings resume.

To be overweight or obese raises your chance for developing diseases, like diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and some malignancies.

Obesity concerns individuals in every country and was responsible for over three and a half million deaths worldwide in 2024, as per the health agency.
