The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in Perth.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, not only the back issue, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
