European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
