British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of access tunnels down to the site... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," Healey added. "Including them were thousands of British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove militants who threaten our security, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

During December, the US military carried out what it described as a "major assault" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
